Revision hip surgery

Download a fact sheet

If you have previously had a hip replacement that is no longer working as it should, revision hip surgery may be the right next step. At Midlands Orthopaedic Clinic, our expert surgeons specialise in complex joint replacement procedures and are here to help you regain comfort, mobility, and confidence in your hip.

What is revision hip surgery?

Revision hip surgery is a procedure to replace or repair an existing hip replacement. Over time, artificial joints can wear out, loosen, or become unstable. In some cases, infection, dislocation, or implant failure may occur. Revision surgery involves removing some or all of the original implant and replacing it with new components to restore the function and stability of your hip.

This surgery is more complex than a first-time (primary) hip replacement, as it often involves managing bone loss, scar tissue, or weakened soft tissues. Our surgeons have extensive experience with these challenging procedures and use the latest techniques and implants to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Why might you need revision hip surgery?

Revision hip surgery may be recommended if you experience:

  • Increasing pain or stiffness in your replaced hip
  • Loosening or movement of the original implant
  • Recurrent dislocations
  • Signs of infection in the joint
  • Fracture or damage around the implant

Our team will carry out a thorough clinical assessment, including blood tests, imaging (X-rays, CT, or MRI scans), and joint aspiration if needed, to determine the cause of your symptoms and whether revision surgery is appropriate.

What happens during the procedure?

The exact surgical approach depends on the condition of your existing implant and surrounding bone. You will receive general or spinal anaesthesia, and your surgeon will carefully remove the old implant components. Any areas of bone loss or damage will be treated using bone grafts or augmentation techniques.

New, specialised revision implants are then inserted. These are often larger or differently shaped to provide better support in complex cases. Once the new components are in place and stable, the area is closed, and you will be taken to recovery where your care team will monitor your progress.

Recovery and rehabilitation

Recovery after revision hip surgery may take slightly longer than after your initial hip replacement, depending on the complexity of your case. However, our team will support you every step of the way:

  • You will begin physiotherapy within the first 24–48 hours to encourage safe movement and prevent stiffness
  • A personalised rehabilitation plan will help you build strength and confidence in your new joint
  • Follow-up appointments will monitor your healing and ensure everything is progressing as expected

Most patients experience a significant improvement in pain and stability over time, allowing for a more active and independent lifestyle.

Benefits of revision hip surgery

  • Relief from pain caused by a failing hip implant
  • Improved joint stability and function
  • Correction of problems such as dislocation, infection, or implant loosening
  • Extended lifespan of your hip replacement
  • Better overall quality of life
